In a league that features the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees, the best team in baseball this year is the Atlanta Braves. They currently hold the best record in all of the big leagues and are thriving on both sides of the ball. Despite having the oldest team in MLB, Atlanta is emerging as the strongest candidate to be an early World Series contender and shows no signs of slowing down.
The Braves’ lineup is putting up ridiculous offensive numbers in the early part of the season. The lineup ranks first in hits, team batting average, team OPS, and RBI. The recent injury to superstar Ronald Acuna Jr. will certainly play a major role in the offense’s performance, but many of the key players in Atlanta’s lineup are swinging hot bats.
Matt Olson is batting nearly .300 with an above 1.000 OPS, while crushing 13 home runs. Second-baseman Ozzie Albies, who is coming off a left hamate bone injury that ended his 2025 season, is batting .326 and currently is tied for the Major League lead in hits with teammate Drake Baldwin. The aforementioned catcher and reigning National League Rookie of the Year for Atlanta is making the best of the situation with Sean Murphy on the Injured List. Baldwin currently leads all catchers in RBI as well as runs scored.
Atlanta’s starting pitching has managed to thrive despite missing some of its best arms. The Braves finished 22nd in team ERA in 2025, but this season, they rank second, just behind the Yankees. The starting staff is doing all of this with Spencer Strider coming back from a left oblique strain that pushed back his 2026 debut.
The rest of the starting staff has been absolutely lights out. Both Chris Sale and Bryce Elder are dominating opposing lineups, holding just slightly above 2.00 ERAs. The 2024 Cy Young winner, Sale leads the majors in wins with a ridiculous six in the first seven starts of the season. He looks unhittable at times as he continues to turn back the clock and have opposing hitters in a blender.
As if having the best offense and starting pitching were not enough, Atlanta also features one of the game’s best bullpens. The series of relievers that the Braves field hold a combined 3.21 ERA, ranking them fourth-best in the league. Closer Raisel Iglesias is holding opposing batters to a .176 batting average while collecting six saves in as many opportunities.
Atlanta’s late relief arms, including Robert Suarez, Dylan Lee, Tyler Kinley, and Reynaldo Lopez, are all thriving in appearances. Each of the relievers named has an ERA below 3.30 while piling up strikeouts. Iglesias was placed on the 15-day Injured List with right shoulder inflammation, but Suarez stepped in and handled the closer spot for the team.
The Braves are as complete a team as a fan will find in MLB. Atlanta has made several late-inning comebacks already in this still-young season and will continue to do so as the year progresses. With the Philadelphia Phillies’ and Mets’ recent struggles to begin the year, the Braves have jumped out to a strong lead in the National League East at 9.5 games. Atlanta will be a tough team to take down this year, and though the Braves have the oldest team, they are built to succeed late in the season and in October.
