Apparently, legendary radio host Howard Stern and New York Yankees announcer Dave Sims are kindred spirits.
Sims, the Yankees’ first-year radio play-by-play voice, punctuates home runs with a “Hey, now!” call. Anyone familiar with Stern knows that the “King of All Media” has used the phrase for years.
“[It’s] a phrase that we say all the time because we love The Larry Sanders Show,” Stern said Tuesday, referring to the 1990s comedy series starring Garry Shandling and Jeffrey Tambor.
Stern pointed out that he says “Hey, now” in a deeper, monotone voice. Sims, on the other hand, emphasizes the phrase; think of it as Stern’s version ending in a period and Sims’s version featuring an exclamation point.

Sims regularly used the phrase when calling Seattle Mariners games, which was his job before replacing John Sterling in the Yankees’ booth. As for its origin, Sims told WFAN on Wednesday that he heard Frank Sinatra sing, “Hey now, I’m in love!” in ‘I’ve Got the World on a String.’
“It came on, and I said, ‘I got to try that in a game one day,’” Sims explained on Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata.
“And I did,” Sims continued. “And it worked.”
With that said, Sims acknowledged he watched The Larry Sanders Show and previously listened to Stern.
Does Stern have any issues with Sims also using the phrase? Not at all.
“And so we welcome Dave Sims to the Yankees,” Stern said, “because anybody who says ‘Hey now’ has got to be a great guy, right?”
