Winning the World Series has been the sole objective for David Stearns since he took over as the president of baseball operations for the New York Mets. They are consistently among the highest payrolls in MLB under Steve Cohen’s ownership. But the Mets have fallen short of their goal in agonizing fashion each time.
David Stearns recently admitted that the World Series drought for the New York Mets has lasted far too long. The 41-year-old stated he has no recollection of the last time the Mets won the championship. Therefore, he can understand the agony of their fanbase craving the elusive Fall Classic title.
“It has definitely been too long. I have zero memories of the Mets winning a World Series,” Stearns said in an interview with SNY on Wednesday. “I feel that as much as anyone.”

The Mets have won the World Series on two occasions since their inception at the start of the Expansion Era in 1962. ‘The Miracle Mets’ earned the first championship for the franchise in 1969 after finishing in last place in the National League nearly every year. They upset the Boston Red Sox for the title in 1986, their second championship, almost 40 years ago.
The New York Mets have qualified for the postseason just three times in the last 10 years. David Stearns guided the team to the National League Championship Series during his first season in 2024. However, they failed to book a playoff spot last year, with the team picking up six fewer wins than the previous campaign.
“The way we win a World Series and we win multiple World Series is by competing at a high level every single year,” Stearns said.
After the disappointing end to the 2025 campaign, Stearns made wholesale changes to the roster. The Mets parted with several established superstars of the franchise to create a more well-rounded team. The focus is seemingly to create a more consistent lineup offensively with sharper defensive abilities.
