Last year, the Boston Red Sox traded pitcher Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves for Vaughn Grissom, a young and confident second baseman who terrorized the minors. Grissom was brought in with the expectation to be the Red Sox second baseman of the future.
Unfortunately, this is not how it ended up working out, and due to numerous injuries and setbacks, he was never fully himself or physically ready to play. This caused him to miss numerous amounts of games, and to struggle in the ones he did get to play.
This hurt Grissom's confidence and left the Red Sox with uncertainty yet again at the second base position. This was until he showed up to camp this year looking bigger, stronger, and more confident than ever.
Grissom is back and healthy, ready to take on the job he couldn't last season. In a recent article from The Athletic, it was noted that Grissom had said, "It doesn’t matter who’s up there or what the situation is, I feel like I’m good for it, I’ve got my confidence back.”
This shows that Grissom is back in his old mindset and is ready to play like his old self again, except better. The Red Sox know what Grissom is capable of, and they have even seen it firsthand. Grissom's first career major league home run was for the Braves against the Red Sox in Fenway Park.
The only problem for Grissom is the controversy between Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman. It is thought that if Devers stays at third, then Bregman will have to move to second, leaving that position filled up.
This does not seem to bother Grissom at all, Grissom is said to be ready to compete and fight for his spot. Whether or not he ends up being the starter, he is ready to make his mark, and his best ball is in front of him.
