Insider: Aroldis Chapman's career with Yankees 'is over'

It was reported Sunday that New York Yankees seven-time All-Star reliever Aroldis Chapman was being left off of the team's postseason roster after skipping a mandatory workout on Friday. Chapman was also issued a fine due to the missed workout.

On Monday, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported further on the situation, writing that the flamethrowing lefty days with the Yankees were done for good.

Manager Aaron Boone said that Chapman had no valid excuse for missing the workout, so the team decided to move forward without him for the group's upcoming ALDS against the Cleveland Guardians.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he was disappointed but not surprised by the player's decision to skip the workout because there had been questions all year as to whether or not he was all in this season.

Chapman was limited to 36 1/3 innings pitched across 43 games due to multiple injuries this season, both of which marked career lows outside of his rookie season and the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign. His 4.46 ERA and 1.43 WHIP also represented the worst figures of his 13-year career.

The 34-year-old Chapman is a pending free agent after this season and there had been talk that the Yankees were considering cutting him a few weeks ago.
