Insider gets brutally honest on potential Mets manager candidate

The New York Mets’ season has not gone according to plan. They have underperformed and are set to miss the postseason. While Andy Green has done a respectable job as the interim manager, he is likely going to return to the front office next season. So, who will be the Mets next manager?

A number of potential candidates have already been mentioned. Hall of Famer and former Mets star Carlos Beltran is among the possible candidates for the job. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently discussed the idea of Beltran landing the role, via Foul Territory.

“I say I’m not sure because he is, or would be, a first time manager. And he’s never managed or coached at any level,” Rosenthal said of Beltran. “(Albert) Pujols has. He’s managed in the Dominican, he’s also managed in the WBC, the Dominican Republic team. Beltran, from that perspective, would be a risk. Three of the last four managers the Mets have hired were also first-timers, and it didn’t end well for any of them. Buck Showalter was the exception in between.

“So, are the Mets willing to go to a first-timer again? Especially one who is as inexperienced as Beltran in this role, he obviously is experienced, great playing experience. But this is different.”

Bringing in Beltran would make sense given his history with the Mets organization. The lack of managing experience may be a concern, though.

Rosenthal also shared the optimistic outlook of Beltran possibly coaching the Mets.

“The positive for Beltran is he’s a unique presence,” Rosenthal continued. “He would be an automatic presence in that clubhouse and would command respect in that clubhouse. He also is already part of the Mets organization, he’s a special assistant.”

At the very least, it seems as if Carlos Beltran will be considered for the Mets managerial opening.
