While rumors surround the New York Yankees regarding the players the team is looking to get ahead of the trade deadline, it appears likely that any target will be a catcher. As the Yankees’ specific plans at the trade deadline remain a mystery, this MLB insider has linked a New York Mets player to the franchise.

According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, Mets catcher Luis Torrens “would be a nice fit” for the Yankees, though long-linked catcher in Minnesota Twins’ Ryan Jeffers also makes sense.”

“Mets backup catcher Luis Torrens would be a nice fit for the Yankees, who seek catching help. Ryan Jeffers, a big hitter (.949 OPS) about to return from a hamate injury, makes sense, but the Twins are contending in an ultra-weak AL,” Heyman wrote.

Torrens has been the backup catcher for the Mets, hitting .214 with two home runs and 18 RBIs in 58 games, and has also been with the Yankees in their farm system. On a low-salary ($4.75 million through next season) and a righty, the fit is there for the team.

Some “dream” scenarios for the Yankees

Regarding other catchers that the Yankees could use, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan would label Jeffers as the “best match,” but Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman as the “dream match.”

“Though the market for catchers is thin, Minnesota could entertain moving Jeffers, an impending free agent, regardless of how well it is positioned,” Passan wrote on Thursday. “And between the much-needed right-handed balance and his production, he suits the Yankees perfectly. Even better, considering the Yankees have no ready-made prospect slated to take over behind the plate, is the 26-year-old Goodman, whose 27 home runs rank third in MLB.”

Still on the injured list due to a fracture in the hamate bone, Jeffers has hit .295, seven home runs, and 26 RBIs in 37 games, whereas Goodman has recorded a .251 batting average. 27 home runs, and 51 RBIs. It remains to be seen who the Yankees target ahead of the trade deadline.
