The 2026 season was one that Jarren Duran would like to have back.
The former All-Star outfielder was one of the worst qualified hitters in baseball, batting just .207 with a .627 OPS through 151 games as an everyday player for the Boston Red Sox. His dip from a stellar 9.0 bWAR season in 2024 to 4.9 in 2025 and 0.4 in 2026 is one of the biggest reasons for Boston’s inability to manufacture a deep postseason run.
At the same time, Duran notched his second career 20-20 season with 20 home runs and 21 stolen bases while playing an excellent left field. A steady defender with speed and pop in the bat will always carry some value in the majors, making him a top candidate for a change of scenery this offseason.
If the Red Sox do look to trade Duran, it could be to a destination that he has been linked to for several years. MLB insider Jon Heyman speculates that if he is moved this offseason, it will “probably be to the Padres because they love him.”

The 30-year-old’s place in Boston’s crowded outfield felt threatened as far back as 2025, but various injuries to young left fielder Roman Anthony made Duran an essential starter both down the stretch in ’25 and during the majority of ’26. While he provided some valuable depth, the production never followed and now leaves thoughts of what a return could have been if they had moved on earlier.
Ahead of the 2025 trade deadline, rumors circulated about a potential deal between the Red Sox and Padres centered on Duran. The reported deal included starting pitcher Dylan Cease, top prospect C Ethan Salas, and another unnamed prospect for Duran, who was just a half season removed from his incredible 2024 campaign. Per MassLive’s Sean McAdam, the Red Sox rejected this package, though subsequent reports have refuted certain details of the Padres’ offer.
Whether or not this exact deal was on the table, it serves as a jarring example of what Duran’s value once was and how much it has fallen. At the 2026 deadline, Duran’s name was once again floated around, but this time as a potential DFA. He himself told Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, “I thought I was going to be released,” after making it through the deadline unscathed.
But of all the things you could call San Diego general manager A.J. Preller, he is not indecisive. If he has his heart set on a player, he is known to go get them, regardless of the cost. It just so happens that, to his benefit, Duran’s cost has dramatically decreased since his last known pursuit.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Duran bounce back to another productive season. He has all the tools to do so. However, the fit in Boston has grown stale and it would be a big shock to see him enter the 2027 season as a starting outfielder for the Red Sox.
