'It’s Tough, It’s Not Easy': Randal Grichuk on adapting to a new role
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

Randal Grichuk shined at the plate during the Diamondbacks’ 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.

Grichuk ignited the offense early, hitting his first triple of the season in the 2nd inning. He later scored Arizona’s first run on a Corbin Carroll triple.

He then clobbered a go-ahead two-run home run in the 4th inning, which handed the Diamondbacks a 4-2 lead. One inning later, Grichuk became just a single shy of the cycle as he hammered a double into left field on the 7th pitch of the at-bat.

Unfortunately, the former 1st round pick from the Angels was unable to secure the cycle as he worked an 8-pitch walk in the 6th inning, then hit a deep fly ball to left field in the 7th.

Grichuk’s efforts raised his season batting average to .316. Since the start of June, he has been on a tear, going 9-for-17 at the plate.

In a postgame interview with Todd Walsh on the Diamondbacks’ TV broadcast, Grichuk discussed his role on the team and the challenges of not being an everyday starter. “Honestly, it’s tough, it’s not easy. This is the first year that I have not played every day, so trying to get a good feel for my routine pregame, during the game.” He added, “I feel good physically right now. When you feel good physically, the mind takes care of itself.”

The 32-year-old has played just nine complete games with Arizona this season. He has started a total of 24.

Grichuk signed a one-year deal with the Diamondbacks in February. Last season, he split his time between the Rockies and Angels, posting a .267 batting average with 16 home runs and 31 doubles over 118 games. In the first half of the 2023 season with the Rockies, he maintained a .308 batting average through 64 games.

This year, Grichuk has exceeded expectations, effectively managing his utility role. He shares time with Jake McCarthy in right field while Alek Thomas recovers from injury.
