Jackson Holliday took a definite step forward in his progression last season with the Baltimore Orioles after an underwhelming rookie campaign in 2024. The 22-year-old left-hander should continue his development further this year as the starting second baseman of the Orioles lineup.
However, Mike Elias, the Baltimore Orioles president of baseball operations, had disappointing news regarding Jackson Holliday on the first day of spring training in Sarasota, Florida. Holliday will undergo a procedure after fracturing his right hamate bone while batting in the cage last Friday. He will not participate in spring training, with the Orioles expecting him to return after Opening Day.
“It’s a pretty common baseball injury for a very long time. Happens to hitters a lot, and it’s nothing concerning long term, but he’s going to miss some time,” Elias played down the concerns while speaking to the media. “You’re not going to see much of him here in Sarasota.”

“He had a great offseason and comes in here early and he’s looking great, and a freak thing [happens],” new Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said. “But his mindset right now is great. He’s going to get the surgery and go through the process of rehab and he’ll be ready to go.”
Holliday played 149 times for the O’s last year, racking up 649 plate appearances in the process. He ended the regular season on a .242/.314/.375 slash line with 17 home runs, 17 stolen bases, and an OPS+ of 95.
The Baltimore Orioles announced that Jordan Westburg will also be unavailable for the start of spring training with a right oblique strain. Mike Elias stated the 27-year-old infielder is already recovering from the injury and will be back on the team before Opening Day.

“About three weeks ago, when he was ramping up—tweaked his right oblique a little bit,” Elias said. “He’s in the process of getting fully better, but he may be a couple of games late.”
Westburg was an All-Star in 2024, but he played just 85 games last year. Nevertheless, he was a solid contributor at the plate, putting up a .265/.313/.457 slash line with 17 home runs and a 114 OPS+.
