In the Boston Red Sox 9-5 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, the Red Sox found themselves repeating the same mistakes that hampered their record in the early days of the season. Five of the Giants' runs came on two Red Sox errors. But it wasn’t just the defense causing a conundrum.
In the top of the eighth inning, Jarren Duran tried stretching a single into a double. It would’ve worked; however, the speedy Duran overslid second base and was called out while trying to keep his hand on the bag. The play was reviewed, and the call was upheld.
Duran had some words for the umpire - and did not mince them. After firing off some expletives, he was ejected. Manager Alex Cora came out to argue after Duran was tossed and was ejected as well. After the game, both were asked about the infield spectacle. Duran, who seemingly cooled off, said this:
"I don't really have an opinion on it. I saw what I saw, they saw what they saw. At the end of the day, I can't change it.
"This game's hard enough -- we shouldn't dwell on one play. We just kind of brush it off."
Cora, on the other hand, was fed up with prior calls on the field. During the argument, he was seen pointing to the other umpires as well, expressing his displeasure with all of them. When asked about the play at second, Cora had this to say:
"He’s safe. Clearly. I think he got thrown out because he voiced his opinion. I'll be the one getting in trouble. The check swing on Friday, the play at the plate, if I'm going to get thrown out, just make it worth it."
