Jarren Duran Must Be Traded This Offseason

Bleacher Report writer Zachary D. Rymer identified Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran as the team’s single biggest trade asset heading into the 2026 offseason. This assessment comes just six days after the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to win the World Series in five games. With a potential lockout looming on December 1, the Red Sox front office faces immediate pressure to clear roster space before business pauses next month.

Rymer’s analysis suggests the team should move Duran immediately to resolve a crowded outfield situation. He noted that Duran still holds significant market value despite a difficult statistical year. The report highlighted that the 2024 All-Star Game MVP has two remaining years of club control left, which makes him a prime candidate for a blockbuster deal.

The Case for Moving Duran

Heavy.com reported that Rymer believes the Red Sox are “all but certain to trade Duran this winter.” This certainty stems from a massive logjam forming in center and right field. Alongside Duran, the roster now includes Gold Glove winners Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu, a challenge Manager Chad Tracy must now face. Rafaela secured his second consecutive Gold Glove Award, while Abreu claimed his third straight, leaving little room for a third regular starter.

Duran’s 2026 performance created a sharp dip in his value, yet his contract status keeps him attractive to other teams. He slashed .207/.266/.361 over the season, hitting 20 home runs and driving in 69 runs. These totals represent a significant drop from his previous two seasons, as he managed only 15 doubles and five triples. Despite the decline, Rymer argues that his blend of power and speed remains rare enough to command a high return.

Roster Crunch and Deadline Moves

The Red Sox have already begun pruning their 40-man roster to comply with Monday’s deadline. The club designated right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly for assignment after he missed much of the 2026 season due to injury. Kelly appeared in just 17 games at the major league level before spending time in Triple-A. This move was expected, but the designation of 23-year-old lefty Eduardo Rivera surprised many observers.

Rivera made his big league debut earlier this year and posted a 6.30 ERA across four appearances, including three starts. He showed much better form in the minors, posting a 2.96 ERA in 24 appearances at Triple-A and a 0.90 ERA in Double-A. The Red Sox announced these roster moves on X on November 3, clearing the way for potential incoming talent. Rivera stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 237 pounds, possessing a fastball that touches triple digits, yet the team chose to move him over 27-year-old Raymond Burgos.

Why the Trade Must Happen Now

In 2027, the Red Sox remain far from the standing required to compete for a championship. While Milwaukee dominated the regular season with the second-best ERA and fifth-fewest home runs allowed, Boston finished with the third-best ERA but hit the fifth-fewest homers. The gap lies in batting average, where Milwaukee led the league at .258 while Boston sat in the middle of the pack. Keeping three elite defenders in the outfield makes no sense when the offense needs an upgrade.

Duran’s value will only decrease if he sits on the bench or plays in a platoon role next year. The front office must capitalize on his remaining control years before his performance drops further. A trade could bring back the hitting depth Boston desperately lacks to complement their elite pitching staff. Waiting until December risks losing leverage if the lockout hits.

Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow must act before the first of the month to avoid being sidelined by league-wide restrictions. The clock is ticking on this window, and the asset list is clear. If Boston wants to fix its offensive woes, moving Duran is the only logical path forward.
