Jazz Chisholm Jr. Oblique Soreness Has Yankees Eyeing a Possible IL Stint

Despite his jovial post-game comments, Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was out of the starting lineup on Wednesday. That came after he exited Tuesday night's game against the Orioles due to discomfort in his right oblique area.

Manager Aaron Boone’s update before Wednesday’s game was a lot less jovial.

He confirmed that Chisholm is experiencing soreness and will undergo an MRI on Thursday in New York to determine the severity of the injury. Ominously, he added it will also determine if a stint on the injured list is necessary.

Chisholm sustained the injury during his first at-bat, grimacing after fouling off a pitch. Despite the discomfort, he hit a double down the right-field line and advanced to third base on an error. However, after sliding into third, he was replaced by pinch-runner Oswald Peraza .

Postgame, Chisholm downplayed concerns about the injury.

"I'm really not as concerned as everybody else. I feel pretty good. I've torn my oblique before, so I know it's not torn or anything. I can cough without any pain. It was just to be cautious, not to try to overdo it. I'd rather take two to three days off than six weeks."

Boone, however, expressed caution, noting that while Chisholm seems to be doing well, there's definitely something going on with the oblique. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming MRI in determining the next steps.

The Yankees have to hope that Chisholm is right about his body. An oblique strain is rarely a short-term injury. Generally, any issue with it will linger with a hitter until they are shut down from swinging for a sustained period.
