Jazz Chisholm Jr. knew he had to do something. The New York Yankees' second baseman saw closer Devin Williams’ outing spiraling out of control again. He couldn’t just stand there and watch it again without trying to help him.
"I just told him that you're the guy every time," Chisholm told reporters after the loss to the Blue Jays Friday night. "This is who we want to give it to, and that's why you're here. We all believe in you. We all got your back, and don't worry about it."
Though it wasn’t enough to resolve Williams' many issues or salvage a win, Chisholm made a really smart, veteran move.
The Yankees' closer, known for his devastating "Airbender" changeup, has seen hitters adjust to it this season. According to Baseball Savant, his once nearly unhittable pitch has its whiff rate plummet from 48.8% last year to just 22% now. Opponents are also feasting on his fastball, hitting .417 against it.
Chisholm may not know pitching mechanics or analytics, but he understands confidence is crucial in baseball. So, his message to Williams continued after the game and through the media.
"I faced him before," Chisholm said. "I know what he's got, and I know how much heart he has. Every day he goes out there, he's trying his best to get outs and close out games. It's New York; it's big, it's a little different. But I know my guy. I've faced him and talked to him a lot over the past years, and I just know what he's got."
Williams’ shaky April has the club contemplating changes. It’s likely that Williams has already lost his job as the Yankees’ closer, at least until he can straighten himself out.
But Chisholm understands the bigger picture, and his message to Williams was for October more than April.
"I just went out there and told him, 'Hey, this is your moment right here,'" Chisholm said. "Every game, the ninth inning—this is your moment."
