Jeremy Peña Opening Day 2026: Finger Injury Update & Fantasy Baseball Advice
Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Jeremy Peña has been sidelined for most of spring training after fracturing his right ring finger preparing to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. The Astros have not announced if Peña will open the season on the injured list, but made a surprise announcement that he will play Tuesday in a minor league game.

The Astros seem to be treating his activity in the game as a mere status check to gauge his preparation or Opening Day.

What Happened and Current Status

Peña suffered an injury to the tip of the right ring finger prior to the World Baseball Classic in early March. Astros manager Joe Espada said Peña suffered damage to the fingernail area of the finger after fielding a hard ground ball in WBC practice. He was pulled from practice shortly thereafter and has not appeared in any games since.

The fracture was discovered during an exam by a hand specialist and Peña was shelved as a result.

Astros Plan If Peña Is Not Ready for Opening Day

A short stint on the IL is possible if Tuesday’s game shows any lingering issues with his grip or swing. If he cannot play Opening Day, the Astros have options, including shifting Carlos Correa to SS in the interim, or moving Jose Altuve around the infield. Nick Allen is also an option at short.

Peña’s performance, or more accurately, his comfort against the AAA Space Cowboys (some call them the Gangsters of Love) will dictate the Astros Opening Day strategy.

Fantasy Baseball Draft & Early-Season Strategy

Fantasy baseball managers, at worst, should prepare for a mid-April activation. Although his projections may have dropped a HR and/or a SB or two from his previous numbers, I would not shy away from Peña if you haven’t yet drafted. Peña is being drafted, on average, at number 105, but about a round earlier in Yahoo and CBS formats.

If you are undeterred by the injury, Peña is a good name to nominate early in an auction. Shortstop is a deep and talented position, so most owners will assume they can get another top player at the position, so Peña might represent a bit of a bargain while his uncertainty is still in play.
