The St. Louis Cardinals have surprised many with their strong start to the season. On Friday, they won the second of their four-game series against the San Diego Padres 6-0.

The biggest highlight came in the 5th inning with a “Little League Grand Slam” by second baseman JJ Wetherholt, per Bernie Wilson of MLB.com. With the bases loaded and one out, Wetherholt hit a grounder to the right side. The ball ended up going past Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr.

Wetherholt cleared all the bases as the Cardinals took a 4-0 lead.

After the game, Wetherholt was humorous in his analysis of his “Grand Slam”.

“I was really trying to hit the ball to left because I was really early on that guy, and tried to get under it, and I hit the ball right on the ground,” Wetherholt said. “So that’s not exactly what I wanted, but found a hole. And I was kind of just going around the bag and see where the throw went, and as soon as I saw it go under his glove, I just started running, and I saw [third-base coach Ron Warner] waving me. It’s like the most I’ve ran in probably four years. It was fun, though.”

The term “Little League Grand Slam” is a colloquialism for a player hitting a “home run” due to defensive errors, rather than hitting the ball out of the park.

Wetherholt went 1-for-5 with two RBIs. He has made quite a name for himself this season already. In March, he became the first player in MLB history to hit a home run in his first game.

Then, he became the first to hit a walk-off in his second.

The Cardinals are 23-15, 3.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.
