Joey Votto narrowly avoided having to buy Reds fan a (used) truck

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto underwent rotator cuff surgery back in August, ending his 2022 campaign. However, since his season ended, Votto has joined the Reds' broadcast booth, adding player insight and some hilarious moments to help close out a disappointing season for the team.

During the Reds' 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night, Votto tried to liven things up with a friendly wager, which nearly backfired on live television.

At Great American Ball Park, if a Reds player hits a Toyota Tundra displayed in the outfield stands or a home run sign in right-center-field, one lucky fan selected before the game wins the truck.

Seemingly frustrated by the lack of a winner, Votto decided to up the stakes a bit.

"I feel like nobody wins the Toyota Tundra," Votto said. "Let's do something this inning. So, if anybody homers on the right side of center field, I'll buy the truck for the fan."

Soon after Votto's offer, Reds catcher Chuckie Robinson pulled a long fly-ball down the right field line, which landed just feet away from the foul pole.

"I tell you what, I may change the criteria here," Votto said as the rest of the booth erupted in laughter, "Used, used. Not before 2017. Must have multiple owners beforehand."

The 39-year-old batted .205/.319./.370 with 11 home runs and 41 RBI in 91 games this season.

A second-round pick by the Reds in the 2002 MLB Draft, Votto has spent his entire 16-year career in Cincinnati. Over 1,991 games with the Reds, Votto has 342 home and 1,106 RBI, slashing .297/.412/.513.
