The Toronto Blue Jays strengthened their position in the offseason with a host of high-profile additions to the team. Kazuma Okamoto was their major signing on the offensive side , joining on a four-year, $60 million deal. But despite the depth in their roster, Blue Jays manager John Schneider is crippled by injuries to several key personnel in the early phase of the season.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Miami Marlins wrapped up their three-game set on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays. Eury Perez started on the mound for the visitors in the decider, with the home team leveling the series the previous day. John Schneider had a few choice words for the Marlins right-hander after a hit by pitch on the Blue Jays’ slugger Kazuma Okamoto.

After pitching three scoreless innings, Perez recorded two outs in the fourth with a runner on first. He then hit Okamoto with a pitch to advance a runner into scoring position. The Marlins pitcher then turned to look at the Blue Jays dugout with a smirk on his face. Immensely annoyed by the reaction, John Schneider pointed his finger at the pitcher, growling at him to look away.
Perez proceeded to strike out the next batter to post four scoreless innings. However, the 23-year-old did not reappear on the mound again. He suffered a back spasm in the dugout while preparing himself for the next inning. Eventually, Perez required assistance from a teammate to come down the steps and move into the clubhouse.
Kazuma Okamoto exacted revenge on the Miami Marlins for the hit by pitch with a solo home run in the sixth inning that helped the Toronto Blue Jays earn a 2-1 win. John Schneider shared his thoughts on the game-winning hit from the Japanese third baseman.
“He has elite power to the opposite field,” John Schneider said after the Blue Jays sealed the series at home against the Marlins. “He had a bit of a lull lately, but everyone goes through it.
“It’s pretty nice for a guy who has taken pitches in the back and arm the last two days to hit a home run.”
It was the 11th home run of the season for Okamoto. He is batting .218/.302/.416 for the season with 29 RBIs and a .718 OPS. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays now have a 27-29 record.
