It’s been an abysmal start to the 2026 campaign for the New York Mets, to say the least. However, MLB insider of the New York Post, Jon Heyman, is looking at the franchise with a half-glass-full mentality, as he shed some light on the positives that are brewing within the organization.
Heyman claimed that the Mets have at least four things to be happy about on a post on X, formerly Twitter. He claims the club should feel happy about Mark Vientos crushing it lately, Brett Baty stepping in and looking good at third base, Carson Benge playing well in his rookie year, and that New York no longer owns the worst record in MLB.
“Mets have things to cheer today: Vientos is killing the ball, Baty looks comfortable back at 3B, Benge is doing great things, and they no longer have the worst record in MLB.”
Vientos, who is 26 years old, has been a solid option in his 88 at-bats so far this season. Through 27 games played, the five-year veteran has recorded 22 hits, four home runs, and 14 RBIs, giving him a .250 batting average and .295 OBP.
Meanwhile, Baty has stepped in and played five games at third base after Bo Bichette struggled playing that role to begin the 2026 season. While Baty isn’t doing anything special at the plate, he is providing consistency at the hot corner, which has been a thorn in the side of the Mets’ defense. He hasn’t recorded an error yet, totaling three putouts and 10 assists with a 100% fielding percentage.
Lastly, while Carson Benge was cold to begin the season, the first-year outfielder has been on fire in his last 11 games, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. During that stretch, Benge owns a .303 batting average and a 0.906 OPS. He hit his third home run during Monday’s 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies to end Tomoyuki Sugano’s no-hitter in the sixth inning.
New York advanced to a 13-22 record in Monday’s victory. The Mets have now won two straight games and have a better record than the 13-23 Los Angeles Angels. The franchise will have a chance to carry this good momentum into Tuesday’s contest against the Rockies.
