Arizona Diamondbacks’ top prospect, Jordan Lawlar, is set to embark on a new chapter in his young career, joining the two-time national champion Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Republic Baseball League this offseason.
The decision to reinforce the middle infield of the Dominican Republic’s most decorated franchise aligns with Arizona’s vision of giving Lawlar more playing time and high-level competition to prepare for future MLB opportunities.
Audo Vicente, the Tigres’ Vice President of Operations and General Manager, expressed excitement about Lawlar’s addition to the team: “We’re signing a player who should make an impact in this league. His ability to steal bases, high knowledge of the strike zone, and discipline at the plate fit perfectly into the planning we had for our roster.”
Jordan Lawlar has spent a large portion of the year on the injured list with a left hamstring strain and thumb injury, limiting him to just 14 games at Double-A with the Amarillo Sod Poodles. Despite the limited time, Lawlar managed to post a .315 batting average, along with a .397 on-base percentage (OBP) and a .500 slugging percentage (SLG).
Over 105 games in 2023, he compiled a .278 batting average with 20 home runs, 23 doubles, and an impressive 36 stolen bases in 41 opportunities. This performance earned him a call-up to the Diamondbacks’ Major League roster, where he made his debut and even played during the World Series.
Arizona selected Lawlar sixth overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, investing nearly seven million dollars in his signing. Keith Law of The Athletic ranked him as having the best tool package of any prospect in that year’s draft class, citing his advanced pitch recognition, speed, and power to all fields.
