Jordan Walker's return to the St. Louis Cardinals lineup will have to wait a bit longer than anticipated.
Manager Oliver Marmol told reporters Wednesday that Walker received an anti-inflammatory injection in his injured left wrist. He will refrain from swinging a bat for the next few days, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Walker, 22, attempted to hit off a tee earlier in the week but had to stop due to lingering soreness.
Walker underwent additional imaging following the setback, which fortunately revealed no structural damage. The injection is aimed at reducing inflammation, with the hope that it will allow him to resume baseball activities in the near future.
However, the Cardinals already confirmed that Walker won't be ready for activation from the 10-day injured list when first eligible on Sunday.
The outfielder had been showing signs of progress before the recent flare-up. On the season, Walker is slashing .215/.273/.310 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 158 at-bats. He had fared well over his last 12 games by batting .333 with one home run and 10 RBIs.
For now, the Cardinals will remain cautious with Walker's recovery, and his timeline for return remains fluid.
