Jose Altuve Missing From Astros’ Announcement on Sunday

Any moms hoping to celebrate Mother’s Day with a Jose Altuve home run got bad news Sunday morning.

The Houston Astros ruled Altuve out of Sunday’s Mother’s Day series finale against the Cincinnati Reds with a hamstring injury. The nine-time All-Star left Saturday’s 13-9 loss in the third inning.

Brendan Rodgers replaced Altuve at second base on Saturday and drew the start again Sunday. Houston started Zach Dezenzo in left field and put catcher Victor Caratini as the designated hitter.

“After that first inning, probably after he ran the bases, he came in, and he said, ‘Joe, my hamstring’s kind of getting tight,’” Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters Saturday night. “So, of course, I just took him out of the game just to be cautious.”

Altuve entered Sunday hitting .259 with four home runs, 14 RBI, and a .682 OPS through 159 plate appearances. However, his defensive struggles in his first year as a left fielder have contributed to him owning a career-worst -0.4 bWAR.

Excluding the shortened 2020 season, Altuve has been worth at least 2.8 bWAR every year since 2014. He posted a 3.4 bWAR and won his seventh Silver Slugger last season.

The Astros are a disappointing 19-19 and trail the Seattle Mariners by three games in the AL West. Houston has only missed the playoffs once since 2015.
