Jose Berrios was projected to return to the Toronto Blue Jays' starting rotation soon, but he's faced struggles and setbacks in his rehab assignments.
The 31-year-old has posted a concerning 14.09 ERA, giving up five home runs across 7.2 innings in his Triple-A Buffalo rehab starts.
Berrios (elbow) has shown signs of rust and has yet to reclaim his workhorse nature and command. When Berrios will make his debut this season remains unknown. In his third rehab start, he was charged with five earned runs across five innings, and he allowed seven earned runs across 3.2 innings in his last start.
The Blue Jays will have to inch him back into the rotation, which would likely mean Eric Lauer would remain in the rotation. This is good news for Lauer, who has wanted to remain as a starter instead of being a long reliever or spot starter.
The Blue Jays have been able to stabilize their rotation with the help of Patrick Corbin and reliability from Kevin Gausman and Dylan Cease.

Another day with lower velocity (sat 90.1 with the sinker, peaked 92.1), but with coldish weather in Scranton other pitchers also had lower than usual velo.#BlueJays
Another sign of rust that Berrios has exhibited is a dip in his fastball velocity in his third start. In addition, in his fourth rehab start, his sinker also showcased a velocity dip.
In his first two rehab starts, he showed positive signs and consistency with his velocity, indicating a sooner return. Overall, his inconsistencies signal more rehab assignments before he's back in the rotation. On a positive note, though, he's effectively built up his pitch count to 70+ pitches.
Having Berrios in prime health and pitching efficiently in the rotation is what the Blue Jays need. There have likely been questions and doubts about his role in the rotation.
But considering his past success and durability, he will likely get first dibs over other options.
