JT Realmuto Re-Signs with Phillies: Fantasy Breakdown
Erik Williams-Imagn Images

J.T. Realmuto signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on January 16, 2026. This was probably best-case scenario for him as it keeps him in a familiar, hitter-friendly environment at Citizens Bank Park. He will turn 35 in March, and although he has caught a lot of games at the major league level, he still has been pretty reliable as far as his health is concerned.

Realmuto Stays Put in a Familiar Fantasy Environment

How does this new contact impact his outlook in fantasy baseball for 2026?

In reality, I am not sure that any contract was going to have a positive impact on J.T. Realmuto’s fantasy value. The current ADP for Realmuto is sitting awful close to 300th overall. However, staying in Philadelphia and playing home games at Citizens Bank Park is better than him going to San Francisco or San Diego.

Why the Contract Itself Does Not Boost Fantasy Value

The reality of the situation is that Father Time is undefeated, and he has really been coming for Realmuto in the past couple seasons. Once an almost sure bet for 20 home runs, the Phillies catcher has just 26 in the past two years combined. For a brief period of time, Realmuto was also active on the base paths, with 50 steals from 2021-23. In 2024, he stole just two bases, and he at least had some rebound in that category with eight. That is a pretty decent number from your catcher, but it is still well off of what we used to expect.

Declining Power and Speed Are the New Reality

On top of the $15 million per year, the new contract for Realmuto comes with $5 million annually in performance incentives. Although he has made a lot of money in his career, that is not a small sum. While his skills are declining, Realmuto will be motivated to try to reach these incentives which could certainly help those hoping for a bounce back. There aren’t details about the incentives as of this writing but surely they are related to offensive production and/or games played, both of which are helpful to his fantasy value.

Incentives Could Provide a Modest Motivation Boost

On top of the age factor, Realmuto has fallen far down the Phillies lineup. He is definitely projected to hit in the bottom third of the lineup, this will hurt his run scoring and RBI potential. If he was able to top 55 runs scored and RBI, it would be considered a successful season for him given his recent past. While his hard-hit rate has remained strong, his barrel rate was down under 9% last season, and his exit velocity is average at best. He did have a few different injuries in 2025, and that could have contributed to his continued decline in production.

Summary: Fantasy Verdict for J.T. Realmuto

In the end, this was a good contract for both Realmuto and the Phillies. While the average annual value seems a little high for a 35-year-old declining catcher, he is still an elite defensive catcher and can be a nuisance on the basepaths. In fantasy baseball, Realmuto has already gone from the undisputed top of his position in 2022, to someone who is a middle tier second catcher thanks to his drop in production and an influx of young talent at the position. For what value is left, it is aided by him staying in Philadelphia.

People Also Ask

Is J.T. Realmuto still worth drafting in fantasy baseball?
Yes, but only as a late-round option or second catcher. His elite upside is gone, but playing time still gives him floor value.

Does staying in Philadelphia help Realmuto’s fantasy value?
Yes. Citizens Bank Park is more hitter-friendly than many alternatives and gives him a better chance to reach double-digit homers.

Can Realmuto rebound in stolen bases in 2026?
A full rebound is unlikely, but 5 to 8 steals is still realistic and useful at the catcher position.

What is a realistic fantasy expectation for Realmuto in 2026?
Think low-teens home runs, modest RBI totals, and solid games played if healthy. That profiles as a mid to low-end catcher.
