Juan Soto heard the chants loud and clear from the Yankee Stadium crowd last week. The “(Expletive) Juan Soto” chants echoed across the Bronx during a game against the Diamondbacks—clear fallout from his decision to sign a record-breaking $765 million deal with the crosstown Mets instead of staying in pinstripes with Aaron Judge and the Yankees.
Soto knows how the Yankee fans feel about him. He told NJ.com’s Bob Klapisch that they “definitely hate” him.
But, he also knows that all is cool with the Yankees captain, his former teammate Aaron Judge.
“He’s a good man, a good person. When I signed [with the Mets], first thing, we got on the phone and talked about it,” Soto told Klapisch. “He told me I made the right decision for my family and that he was happy for me. That’s what a real friend says.”
Soto’s comments make it clear that the bond between the two stars survived the offseason drama despite fevered speculation. Judge’s comment that he had not talked to Soto since the last game during his MVP press conference led to questions about their relationship. Soto’s comments that he had not talked to any of his former Yankees teammates led fans to wonder about his experience in the Bronx.
Judge, however, cleared up his thoughts on Soto during spring training.
Judge and Soto played together for one electric season in the Bronx in 2024. Both delivered MVP-caliber performances and led the Yankees back to the World Series for the first time since 2009. The Yankees bid up to $760 million for Soto, but the 26-year-old slugger took a generational offer from the Mets and crossed borough lines.
Now, Judge and Soto are still two of the biggest faces in baseball in the same city on opposite sides of a Subway Series that could get spicy. But behind the scenes, Judge and Soto understand each other well enough to ignore the outside noise.
