Juan Soto's Feat Against Braves Helps Set New Mets Franchise Record

Juan Soto's first season with the New York Mets has been an adventure. The Mets season has also been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. After Soto, 26, signed his massive 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets, expectations for the entire franchise immediately began to rise.

While the season got off to a rocky individual start for Soto, the Mets looked like postseason contenders from the first pitch of the 2025 MLB season. However, the Mets season has since taken a turn for the worse.

After once leading the National League East division, the Mets now find themselves in second place at 64-57, trailing the Philadelphia Phillies. And they have been one of the worst teams in the entire league over the past month, including posting a 2-13 record over their past 15 games.

Juan Soto Helps Break Mets Franchise Record During Thursday's Game

While it has looked particularly gloomy around Citi Field as of late, Mets players have still managed to break multiple records this week. Mets first-baseman, Pete Alonso, broke Darryl Strawberry's franchise record for home runs (253) on Tuesday, and the Mets collectively set a new franchise record on Thursday.

During the bottom of the sixth inning of Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves, Soto stole second base. While it sounds ordinary, this was consecutive stolen base No. 36 without getting caught by Mets players this season. That's is a new Mets franchise record.

Francisco Lindor stole base No. 35 earlier in that same inning, setting up Soto for this new Mets franchise record.

The record for most consecutive stolen bases without being caught, in one season, is 39. This record was set by the Boston Red Sox in 2013. That same Red Sox team stole 40 consecutive bases in the regular season (2013 and 2014) and 45 consecutive overall bases (including the 2013 postseason).

The record for the most consecutive stolen bases without being caught, by a player, is Vince Coleman with 50 (1988 and 1989).

While the Mets continue to set franchise records at a frenetic pace, they continue to run just as fast, away from postseason contention. After losing 4-3 to the Braves on Thursday, the Mets are now clinging to a 0.5 game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the final NL Wild Card spot.

A (not so) fun fact for New York baseball teams is the Mets and New York Yankees both hold an overall record of 64-57, while both hold a 0.5 game lead over their next closest competition for the final Wild Card spot in their respective league.
