Kevin Gausman Makes Interesting Toronto Comments After Trade

Kevin Gausman was a tremendous Toronto Blue Jay and one of the best free-agent signings in franchise history. He didn’t want his time north of the border to come to an end, but with the team underperforming and out of the playoff picture, management pulled the plug and dealt his expiring contract to the Chicago Cubs.

Could he return to the Blue Jays again this winter? Technically, yes, but with the way things ended, it felt more like closure for his time in Toronto, and his latest comments show he’s already settling into life in Chicago.

Gausman said:

“Yeah I mean it’s really fun. You know it’s funny, my wife, this is the first time she’s been here, and after the first day she was here she said it’s so different than Toronto and I was like yeah the focus is baseball, it’s really grass, it’s outside. You know so there’s a lot of different things than what we’re used to but we’re excited for all of the new experiences,”

The 35-year-old Gausman is, of course, in the fifth and final year of the five-year, $110 million contract he signed to join the Blue Jays as a free agent in 2021. He’s gone 5-10 across 23 starts so far this season, sporting a 4.38 ERA and a 127-36 strikeout-to-walk ratio along the way.

While some may take it as a slight, perhaps suggesting that Toronto cares more about hockey than baseball, Gausman certainly didn’t mean any malice with his comments. He loved everything about the city and what it meant to be a Blue Jay and expressed that throughout his tenure.

There had originally appeared to be a chance that we could see Gausman make his first start as a Cub in Thursday’s one-off makeup game against his former team. However, plans have changed, and David Peterson will be on the mound instead. Either way, it won’t take long for Gausman to see some familiar faces just days after being dealt out of Toronto.
