Kevin McGonigle is pulling a George Costanza as he make his way to the big leagues.

The Detroit Tigers announced the exciting news on Tuesday that their infield phenom McGonigle has made the team’s roster for Opening Day. McGonigle had a phenomenal spring for Detroit and will now be rewarded with a roster spot on the Major League team to begin 2026.

In the wake of the news, jersey number database “MLB Jersey Numbers” revealed what digits (or perhaps more accurately, digit) McGonigle will be wearing for the Tigers. He is set to don the No. 7.

No. 7 has been worn by a total of 39 players for the Tigers over the years. The most recent one to do so was veteran outfielder Manuel Margot during the 2025 season, but the most notable No. 7s for Detroit include Hall of Famers Ivan Rodriguez and Eddie Mathews as well as many-time All-Stars Rocky Colavito and Harvey Kuenn.

McGonigle is a 21-year-old shortstop who bats lefty. He was the No. 37 overall pick by the Tigers in 2023 and won the Midwest League Top MLB Prospect Award in 2025.

Now viewed as the consensus No. 2 prospect in Major League Baseball (behind Pittsburgh’s Konnor Griffin), McGonigle raked during spring training with an impressive OPS of .923. The Tigers will have a lot of interesting storylines this season and just earned an ALDS berth last season. But McGonigle has pulled off the very impressive feat of making the Opening Day roster for a veteran, win-now team in Detroit.
