The 2024 season may be over for ASU Baseball, but that also means that two players were honored with extraordinary accolades.
Sun Devils sophomore outfielder Kien Vu became an NCAA Baseball All-American on Wednesday as well as redshirt freshman Brandon Compton being named a Freshman All-American based on their accomplishments and play on the field.
Making history under head coach Willie Bloomquist, Vu is Arizona State’s 133rd All-American in program history, making the third team nominated by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association. Leading the Pac-12 Conference in batting average (.413), he finished fifth in the country overall.
In program history, there have been just eight seasons an All-American did not come out of ASU after Sterling Slaughter became the first in 1963. Bloomquist has produced Vu, Nate Baez and Joe Lampe in 2022 and Luke Keaschall last year since taking over as the Sun Devils’ head coach in 2022.
Not only did Vu get selected, but Compton was nominated by the NCBWA onto a Freshman All-American first-team. Slotting into the Sun Devils roster as a designated hitter, Compton is the 37th Freshman All-American in program history. Compton was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year several weeks ago. First baseman Jacob Tobias and catcher Ryan Campos were the last two players to receive such a title since 2022.
Compton, Vu and Campos were also First Team selections on the ABCA/Rawlings Division I West Region Team. Because of this, the three are up for All-American honors through that organization too.
The Mesa native Campos owned a .364 average and had 86 hits and 11 home runs through 58 games this season. He has completed his third season at ASU, boasting a career .368 average, 209 hits and 21 homers.
