Kodai Senga enjoyed an excellent first season in the MLB with the New York Mets in 2023. The Japanese starting pitcher has missed the vast majority of the past two seasons due to a spate of injuries. Moreover, Senga made a terrible start to the 2026 campaign before the Mets placed him on the IL last week with lumbar spine inflammation.

The New York Mets fans received some positive news regarding Kodai Senga, with the team also showing some improvement following their disastrous opening month of the season. According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the 33-year-old right-hander took part in a throwing session on Wednesday to begin his rehab program for the lumbar spine issue.

“Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) restarted a throwing program today. He’s just playing catch right now and will need a buildup, but Senga is at least on his way,” DiComo posted on X.

Kodai Senga made five starts for the Mets before joining the 15-day IL, but he reached the fifth inning in only his last two outings. Therefore, he pitched only 20.0 innings thus far, posting a 9.00 ERA with a 1.950 WHIP.

“[Senga’s] feeling a lot better, so now we’ve got to build him back up,” Mendoza told reporters on Wednesday.

Although the Mets are still struggling at the bottom of the National League East, starting pitching is arguably not their biggest issue at the moment. They currently have a 14-22 record, trailing the division leaders by 11 games. The Mets have a lot of ground to catch up as they enter May.
