Another day, another dollar, and another rumor mill churning out delicious “what-ifs” for the MLB offseason. The latest dish? The Los Angeles Dodgers, fresh off their second consecutive World Series win, are supposedly sniffing around top free agent Kyle Tucker. On the surface, it’s a match made in baseball heaven. The Dodgers have more money than they know what to do with, and Tucker is looking to get paid.
But hold your horses. Just because the Dodgers can afford to buy a small country doesn’t mean they’ll throw a blank check at every shiny new toy. It seems the new “Evil Empire” might have a different trick up its sleeve. Instead of going all-in on Tucker, they might be looking to beef up the one part of their roster that looked even remotely human last season: the bullpen.
Let’s be real, the Dodgers’ bullpen has been a bit of a rollercoaster. They threw a cool $72 million at Tanner Scott last winter, and his first year in LA was, to put it kindly, a bit of a dumpster fire. A 4.74 ERA and a trip to the injured list that kept him out of the entire postseason isn’t exactly what you want from your high-priced setup man. Ouch.
Still, the front office is publicly backing their guy, chalking it up to “reliever volatility.” It’s the classic “he’ll be fine” speech, but you have to wonder if they’re nervously sweating behind the scenes. General Manager Brandon Gomes is saying all the right things, but actions speak louder than words.
They’re also moving Rōki Sasaki back to the starting rotation after his surprise stint as the playoff closer. This leaves a gaping hole in the ninth inning. While they could chase big names like Edwin Diaz or Devin Williams, the price tag might be too rich for their blood, especially with Scott’s contract still on the books.
This is where it gets interesting for other teams, like the Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays. With the Dodgers potentially bowing out of the Tucker sweepstakes, the path is clearing for another team to swoop in. The Cubs, who just watched Tucker reject their qualifying offer, are now left with a Tucker-sized hole in their lineup and a compensatory draft pick as a consolation prize.
For Cubs fans, this is a painful case of déjà vu. The front office seems to be banking on internal prospects to fill the void, which is a massive gamble. Tucker was the engine of their offense for the first half of the season, and when he went down, the whole team sputtered. Pretending that losing an MVP-caliber player won’t hurt is a level of optimism that borders on delusion.
So, while the Dodgers are playing 4D chess with their bullpen, the rest of the league is holding its breath to see where Tucker lands. Will he get that record-breaking deal? And which team will be lucky enough to have “King Tuck” anchoring their lineup for years to come? Stay tuned, because this offseason is just getting started.
