If Paul Skenes was unhappy about girlfriend Olivia Dunne’s steamy ‘Baywatch’ photos, the embarrassment has probably taken a back seat to what happened to him during the Pittsburgh Pirates’ season opener on Thursday.

Skenes suffered the biggest humiliation of his career on the day. The team took him out after just two-thirds of an inning.

The 2025 NL Cy Young Award winner lasted just 37 pitches into the opener. He registered two outs but allowed five runs, also hitting Francisco Alvarez with one of his pitches.

Manager Don Kelly opted to pull him out, prompting some surprise from the former LSU star as he walked back to the dugout.

Paul Skenes Did Not Look Comfortable On Thursday

The Pirates got off to a hot start. Brandon Lowe hit a two-run home run at the top of the first inning, giving Skenes a lead to protect. But the superstar pitcher seemed off from the jump.

“Yeah really tough inning for us,” Kelly told NBC after the first inning (H/T Sports Illustrated). “It’s pitch-count related really, for him. I don’t want to push him into the mid-40s.”

Skenes went into the game in an aggressive mood, urging the Pirates to go for the division and the playoffs.

“We want to win the division. We want to make the playoffs. That’s it. How we do that, who knows?” he said on Wednesday.

‘I don’t want to put a number of games out there because that´s just putting a ceiling on us,” he added. “We’ve got to go out there and play well every day. We have a good team. Now we’ve got to go out there and win.”

He did not exude the confidence he asked of his team on Thursday.

Pittsburgh trailed 4-6 at the top of the 5th at the time of writing.
