Logan O’Hoppe’s Terrible Season Worsens

Angels Catcher Logan O’Hoppe was already not doing the greatest. In fact, the Angels in general have not been doing well. But Logan O’Hoppe was not much help. And to add insult to literal injury, he now has a hurt wrist.

O’Hoppe Was Already Not Doing Great

Even before O’Hoppe got hurt, things weren’t looking good for him. He was struggling offensively. He was hitting .205 with only one home run and 8 RBI, which is not great. He is hovering right on the edge of the dreaded Mendoza line. He is not the only Angels player to do poorly this season, but that is a conversation for another time.

He still did fairly well as a defender before the injury. He threw out two runners in his final game, which isn’t bad. He attempted to make a comeback from a bad year in 2025, but unfortunately, he had a weak start this year. Still, the team really wanted to believe that this was the year he would make a comeback.

The Injury

Here’s how O’Hoppe got hurt, in case you didn’t already know. On Saturday, April 26, the Angels were playing the Kansas City Royals. He was hit directly on his exposed left wrist by a foul ball. He finished the inning, but it turned out that he had a fracture. The next day, O’Hoppe was placed on the 10-day injured list.

Even though it was only a small fracture, this was probably devastating for O’Hoppe. If you’ve ever felt yourself coming down with a cold the day before a big event, on a small scale, you may be able to relate to what O’Hoppe was feeling at that moment.

He has been itching to return to the team, and despite his failures, the team has high hopes for him. After this injury, it would be easy for him to start getting discouraged and feeling like all his hard work has gone down the drain.

Staying Hopeful

O’Hoppe has still managed to remain more optimistic than I would be in that situation. He’s obviously frustrated and disappointed, but he seems to think that the injury is minor and he will be back by mid-May.

O’Hoppe’s optimism could indeed be wishful thinking, but sitting in his room crying all day wouldn’t do much good either. Even if he doesn’t recover as quickly as he’s hoping for, it’s good for a player to keep his mental health and morale strong. He can’t possibly be in good physical health if his mental health is spiraling. Staying level-headed is probably the best thing he can do for himself at the moment.

Who Will Pick Up the Slack?

Veteran Travis d’Arnaud is currently the replacement for O’Hoppe. Sebastian Rivero is the backup catcher. However, d’Arnaud himself recovered from a foot injury pretty recently. Also, his early-season numbers were not great. Now, he is being relied on more defensively than offensively.

Starter Yusei Kikuchi has performed significantly better with d’Arnaud behind the plate than O’Hoppe, which is worth noting. Defensively, he has been much better for the team than O’Hoppe. It just shows how bad the Angels need to clear the space on their roster. Rivero has had a huge impact on the team as well. He is healthy and doing very well when he plays. Though he hasn’t had many chances to play.
