Chad Green’s tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays has come to an end.
Between the two games on Tuesday, the Blue Jays made a few roster moves, trading for Seranthony Domínguez, optioning Easton Lucas, activating Paxton Schultz, and designating Green for assignment.

Green’s tenure with the Blue Jays is best described as “up and down”. During the 2022-23 off-season, Green was signed to a convoluted deal with various options, as he had Tommy John surgery the season before.
The right-handed pitcher returned in September 2023 for the Jays’ postseason push, putting up okay results: a 5.25 ERA and 2.67 FIP in 12 innings pitched, thanks to a 30.8 K% and 7.7 BB%. Most of the damage came in two games, his first one on September 1 and another one on September 13th.
Green’s best season as a Blue Jay came in 2024. Although the Blue Jays ultimately finished with a 74-88 record, Green finished with a 3.21 ERA and 4.29 FIP in 42.2 innings pitched, with a 21.9 K% and 6.7 BB%.
That said, the Blue Jays missed their best chance to trade the veteran reliever. By the 2024 trade deadline, Green had a 1.62 ERA and 4.16 FIP, with a 24.8 K% and 7.2 BB%. The Jays elected not to trade him in their sell-off. Green had a strong August but struggled in September.
The 2025 season hasn’t been great for Green. After Tuesday afternoon’s game, the 34-year-old has a 5.56 ERA and 6.68 FIP in 43.2 innings pitched. He also gave up two home runs in that game, bringing his total to 14, the most for any reliever in the big leagues.
For about a month, there was a stretch where Green was terrific. From June 18 until July 12, Green allowed one earned run in 10.2 innings pitched for a 0.84 ERA and 4.68 FIP. The lone run came thanks to a, you guessed it, home run.
Unfortunately, Green started to struggle again and had given up 11 home runs over his last 3.2 innings pitched. This season, Green earns $10.5 million towards the payroll, and the Jays will be on the hook for the money unless a team claims him on waivers or he’s traded, both seem unlikely.
That said, Green will find a new team rather quickly, as he has a track record of success in the big leagues.
