The Los Angeles Dodgers traveled to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers are going for their fifth National League Pennant in the last 10 years. The Brewers, on the other hand, are trying to win their first National League Pennant in Franchise History. Can the Milwaukee Brewers’ stellar run continue?
Blake Snell took the ball in Game 1 and mowed down the Brewers’ lineup. He went eight innings, allowing just one hit, and struck out 10. Snell has absolutely dominated in the postseason so far, pitching 21 innings, giving up two earned runs, and striking out 28 batters. After his start today, Snell has a 0.86 ERA in the playoffs.
The Dodgers were able to load the bases in the first inning, but Sal Frelick made an amazing catch, robbing Max Muncy of a grand slam. Frelick got his glove over the wall, bobbled it, and regained control. A perfect relay to Joey Ortiz, gunned down Teoscar Hernandez at home to keep the game scoreless. Freddie Freeman put the Dodgers ahead in the 6th inning with a solo homer, and Snell shut them down.
Los Angeles was able to add a key insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, as Mookie Betts was able to draw a walk with the bases loaded. This is the second time Betts has walked in a run during the playoffs, doing it in the final game of the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies. Dave Roberts brought in Roki Sasaki to close the game, but he ended up getting himself into trouble. The Dodgers turned to Blake Treinen, who was able to strike out Brice Turang, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the series.
The Brewers contained the Dodgers’ star-powered lineup, but their lineup simply couldn’t touch Snell. Milwaukee put just one runner on base through eight innings, courtesy of Caleb Durbin’s single in the 3rd inning. They made things interesting in the 9th inning, putting pressure on Sasaki. Isaac Collins drew a walk, and Jake Bauers followed it with a ground-rule double to center field. Jackson Chourio drove in their first run of the game with a sacrifice fly, scoring Collins. Christian Yelich and William Contreras both walked, loading the bases for Milwaukee with 2 outs.
Turang had a chance to have a signature moment, but unfortunately struck out on a pitch that was multiple inches high in the strike zone. Blake Treinen threw a pitch inside that would’ve hit Turang and tied the game, but he dove out of the way, saving the Dodgers. The Brewers will look to even the series tonight with Freddy Peralta on the mound.
