Louis Varland made a big impact on the Toronto Blue Jays’ bullpen last year after arriving from the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline. The 28-year-old right-hander became a dependable option, filling in various roles for the team in the postseason. This included five appearances in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Toronto Blue Jays concluded a three-game series on the road against the Los Angeles Angels this week. Louis Varland gave autographs to fans at the ballpark. But the 28-year-old right-hander was almost furious upon learning he signed the glove of a Los Angeles Dodgers fan. He genuinely wanted to rub it out and was quite unhappy when the fan did not allow it.
“I’m going to scribble it out. I’m serious. Let me scribble it out,” Louis Varland told the fan in a clip on social media from Jomboy Media.
“That’s tough,” he answered after the fan refused. “That’s on me. I should’ve looked.”

Louis Varland has been one of the best relief pitchers in the MLB over the opening four weeks of the 2026 campaign. He has yet to allow an earned run over 13.0 innings while striking out 19 batters thus far. His brother, Gus Varland, was a teammate of Shohei Ohtani with the Dodgers in 2024
Following three blown saves in the opening weeks of the new season, the Toronto Blue Jays officially removed Jeff Hoffman from the closer role on Thursday. Louis Varland will probably be one of the members of the closer committee, along with Tyler Rogers and Brydon Fisher.
“In the short term, we are going to share that [closing] responsibility,” Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Friday. “[Hoffman’s] still going to be getting very important outs for us, and I very much believe in him as a weapon for us.”
Hoffman has a 7.59 ERA from his 12 outings this season. Louis Varland, Rogers, and Fisher all have a sub-2.50 ERA.
