Manny Machado, Padres finalizing massive 11-year extension

Manny Machado will not be a free agent after this season after all.

After saying that he intended to opt out of his contract with the San Diego Padres following the 2023 Major League Baseball season, Machado and the Padres are finalizing a new massive contract on Sunday morning that would keep him in San Diego for the foreseeable future.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the contract is an 11-year, $350 million extension that will be the fourth-largest contract in Major League Baseball history.

Machado originally signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres prior to the 2019 season.

During his first four years with the team he has remained one of the best players in baseball, finishing in the top-three of the MVP voting two times, including as a runner-up during the 2022 season.

There is some financial risk to signing a 30-year-old to an 11-year contract worth that much money, but Machado should remain an elite player for the next few years and the Padres are clearly all in on trying to win their first ever World Series title.

Along with Machado, the Padres have acquired a number of impact players in recent years including Juan Soto and Xander Bogaerts.

Add in the return of Fernando Tatis Jr. following his suspension and the Padres will have one of the league's most dangerous lineups.
