The Boston Red Sox have a real infield problem.
Whether it be first baseman Triston Casas’s season-ending surgery, Alex Bregman’s quad injury, or Rafael Devers’ refusal to move back into the field, the Red Sox need some answers at critical positions.
Here is the latest from Chris Cotillo of Mass Live, via “Foul Territory:”
The Red Sox infield plans have been screwed up in a BIG way, says @ChrisCotillo.

“Mayer is gonna play third, it seems like he’s the plan on an everyday basis, which is kinda crazy because this kid is a natural shortstop. He was starting to work out at second base, so they could move Campbell to first. Now all those plans are kinda ruined,” Cotillo said.
Bregman is out for the foreseeable future , and manager Alex Cora related the strain to a similar occurrence in 2021, which kept him out for two-and-a-half months.
Any time without Bregman is a difficult one for this faltering Boston squad, which is down to 27-29 on the year and seven-and-a-half games back of the American League East-leading New York Yankees.
The Mayer development is exciting, even with him out of position, and it is only a matter of time before outfielder Roman Anthony joins the mix to complete the Red Sox’s prospect trifecta.
However, Kristian Campbell’s slump at the plate has driven his yearly numbers into a concerning depth, as he now has a .224 batting average, a .669 OPS, an 88 OPS+, three home runs, and 53 strikeouts to 23 walks. Campbell is in dire need of a hot streak.
Trevor Story, the oft-injured veteran shortstop, has also struggled at the plate, with a .222 batting average, a .594 OPS, a 66 OPS+, and five home runs. Story still has three years left and $75 million owed on his contract. He does have an opt-out after this year, but it feels unlikely that he would receive anywhere near those totals on the open market.
Boston needs answers, and it starts with their everyday starters getting back on track.
