Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh turned in one of the greatest seasons for a catcher in MLB history. He batted .247 with an on-base percentage of .359 and a .589 slugging percentage with a majors-leading 60 home runs and an American League-leading 125 RBIs.

The switch hitter continued his stellar play when the Mariners got to the postseason. In 12 playoff games, Raleigh hit .304 with a 1.081 OPS, five long balls and eight RBIs.

Unfortunately for him and the rest of the Mariners, this stellar play was not enough, as Seattle fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games in the ALCS.

Raleigh's incredible regular season put him in the history books. He became just the seventh player in MLB history to hit 60 home runs in a single season and the fourth American League player to do so. The 28-year-old also set the record for most homers hit by a catcher in a single season.

The debate for who will win the 2025 American League MVP has been going on all season. It has mostly come down to two names: Raleigh and New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge.

Despite the MVP conversation, on Friday, the Mariners announced some other award news regarding Raleigh on the team's X account.

"What a year for Big Dumper ," the caption read. "Cal Raleigh is the @sportingnews MLB Player of the Year, as voted by his peers! #TridentsUp"

This award has been given out by The Sporting News every year since 1936 to the best player in MLB that season. With the honor this year, Raleigh becomes the third Mariners player to win it after Alex Rodriguez won in 1996 and Ken Griffey Jr. won the year after.

Although Raleigh's historic season has come to an end, there is no doubt he will continue to be recognized throughout the offseason.
