Mariners are Making Bizarre MLB History and it Somehow Makes Sense

The Seattle Mariners are only two games into the 2026 season, but they have already done something that feels almost impossible in modern baseball. Through their first two games against the Cleveland Guardians, Seattle has not recorded a single. Not one.

Every hit has gone for extra bases, creating a stat line that immediately stands out and forces you to take a second look. It is not just rare, it is something that has not happened to begin a season in over a century. What makes it even more interesting is that the Mariners are not struggling because of it.

They are 1-1, they have already shown they can score runs, and they look like a team that is leaning fully into a power-first identity that could define how they play all season.

No Singles, No Problem, Just Damage

Through two games, Seattle has nine hits. All nine are extra-base hits.

That includes six home runs, two doubles, and a triple. No singles anywhere.

It is rare for any team to go even a short stretch without a single, but to open a season like this puts the Mariners in a category by themselves. No team since 1900 has started a year this way.

And somehow, it is working.

Seattle has already scored nine runs and split its first two games despite hitting just .155 as a team.

A Lineup Built for Power, Not Small Ball

This is not random.

The Mariners are clearly built to do damage with every swing. They are not trying to stack singles together. They are trying to change the game in one moment.

Randy Arozarena has already contributed with a double. Dominic Canzone and Luke Raley have each hit two home runs. Brendan Donovan added both a home run and a double, while Leonardo Rivas chipped in a triple. Cole Young added a three-run homer.

Every hit has had impact. Nothing has been routine.

The Math Behind this Start

The Mariners have reached base 18 times through two games.

Nine hits. Nine walks.

Every baserunner has come from patience or power. There has been nothing in between.

In today’s game, where power and discipline are emphasized more than ever, this is an extreme version of that approach.

Sustainable or Just Early Season Noise

This will not last forever. At some point, a ball will find grass for a single.

But that is not really the point.

The bigger takeaway is how Seattle is built. They can score quickly. They do not need long rallies. They can change a game with one swing.

If that continues, this lineup does not have to look traditional to be effective. It just has to keep doing damage.
