Mariners' Emerson Hancock Announces Update After Leaving Rays Game

Seattle Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock entered this season without a guaranteed spot in the starting rotation. He was actually expected to be a key depth piece instead.

However, after an injury to teammate Bryce Miller, he earned a starting spot and has performed so well that Seattle opted to go with a six-man rotation just to keep giving him opportunities.

Across 18 starts this year, the 27-year-old has posted a 3.17 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings of work. He has finally reached the potential the Mariners always envisioned, having selected him sixth overall in the 2020 MLB Draft.

Unfortunately, Hancock suffered an injury during Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

In the bottom of the first inning, Rays designated hitter Yandy Diaz struck a ball at 107.2 mph off the bat and Hancock attempted to field it with his right hand. He did not catch it cleanly but still recovered and made the play, recording the out at first base.

However, he was clearly shaken up, and after recording two outs in the second inning, a trainer and manager Dan Wilson came out to visit. After a brief conversation, Hancock was removed from the game with Jose Ferrer entering in relief. After the game, Hancock spoke with reporters and revealed the latest update on his condition.

"Hancock said the hand should be fine. Got hit on the inside of the right hand with the bottom of his middle finger getting the worst of it. X-rays taken at the Trop were negative," reported Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports.

Fortunately, an injured list stint does not appear to be necessary. The Mariners have the depth to manage if needed, but getting positive news on Hancock is a significant relief for a team with genuine October aspirations.

He will likely have an even bigger role in the second half, and keeping him healthy and available is one of the more important priorities for Seattle heading into July.
