Mariners' Eugenio Suarez hits game-winning grand slam in ALCS Game 5

Eugenio Suarez made Game 5 of the ALCS his stage to become a Seattle Mariners playoff legend.

Through seven innings, Suarez’s solo home run in the second inning was the Mariners’ lone source of offense against the Toronto Blue Jays. The home team trailed 2-1 in front of an anxious crowd inside T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington.

The eighth inning served as Suarez’s epic encore. Cal Raleigh led off the inning with a game-tying solo home run off Blue Jays reliever Brendon Little. Jorge Polanco, Josh Naylor and Randy Arozarena all got on base without a hit.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Suarez etched his name in Mariners’ postseason history with a go-ahead grand slam to right field.

Suarez had just six hits over his last 50 at-bats before the grandest salami in recent Mariners history. It was the fourth grand slam of the season and the second ever in a Seattle postseason game. He also joined an exclusive club:

The Mariners made three quick outs after Suarez’s go-ahead blast, but it didn’t matter. Closer Andres Munoz came on in the top of the ninth inning and got the game’s final three outs on 11 pitches.

The Mariners acquired Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks on the final day of the MLB trade deadline. That deal paid off with one swing of Eugenio’s bat.

With Friday’s 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays, the Mariners got themselves within a game of reaching the World Series for the first time in franchise history. The team has gotten to the ALCS three times in the past, but has never gotten this close to playing in the MLB postseason’s main event.
