The Seattle Mariners placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the 10-day injured list Monday with knee discomfort ahead of their series opener against the Los Angeles Angels . In a corresponding move, Seattle selected the contract of infielder Buddy Kennedy after acquiring him from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The Mariners enter the series at 42-43, sitting a half-game behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.
Refsnyder, 35, is in his first season with Seattle after signing a one-year, $6.25 million contract during the offseason. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of the University of Arizona, he has also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays , Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, and Boston Red Sox. Through 49 games this season, Refsnyder is batting .133 with a .203 on-base percentage, a .422 OPS, three home runs, and nine RBIs. Those numbers fall well below his 2024 campaign with Boston, when he batted .283 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs and established himself as one of the more reliable bats against left-handed pitching in the American League. Seattle signed him specifically to fill that role, making his struggles and now his absence a significant development for a lineup that has dealt with inconsistency throughout the first half.

Buddy Kennedy takes his roster spot.
Luke Raley (left forearm) and Dom Canzone (hamstring) playing through injuries. Connor Joe is here on the taxi squad in case one of them needs an IL stint.
According to Adam Jude of X, general manager Justin Hollander revealed that Refsnyder underwent injections in both knees last week in an effort to reduce the discomfort. Rather than continue playing through the issue, Seattle opted to place him on the injured list and add Kennedy to the active roster.
Kennedy, acquired from San Francisco on Sunday, gives the Mariners a versatile infielder capable of playing multiple positions. His addition provides Seattle with roster flexibility at a time when the club is managing injuries across multiple positions.
Jude also reported that outfielder Luke Raley is playing through a left forearm injury and outfielder Dominic Canzone is managing a hamstring issue. Connor Joe is traveling with the club on the taxi squad in case either player requires an injured list stint. The number of players managing physical issues underscores how taxing the first half has been for Seattle's position player group.
Refsnyder's absence removes an experienced right-handed bat from a lineup already short on healthy options. The club has dropped three consecutive series and enters Monday's opener against the Angels looking to stabilize on both sides of the ball at T-Mobile Park.
Refsnyder will be eligible to return after the minimum 10-day stay. With the AL West race tightening and injuries mounting across the roster, how Seattle navigates the next several weeks could determine whether the Mariners remain a factor in the division race through the second half.
