Arozarena has been on the IL since June 13 with a left hamstring strain. It was the first time he was placed on the IL since August of 2021 when he played for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Arozarena injured himself while trying to beat out an infield ground ball against the Washington Nationals on June 12. The Mariners made the decision to put him on the shelf four days later (retroactive to June 13).
The 31-year-old is having a strong season for Seattle, slashing .291/.377/.448 with a .825 OPS, seven home runs, 33 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 71 games. Arozarena hit a career-high 27 homers, posted a .760 OPS and stole 31 bases in 160 games last season, which was his first full campaign with the Mariners. He made the AL All-Star team as well.
The Mariners acquired Arozarena from the Rays at the 2024 MLB trade deadline. He first made a name for himself with the Rays in the 2020 postseason, where he helped lead Tampa Bay to a World Series appearance. In 20 postseason games that year, Arozarena slashed .377/.442/.831 with a 1.273 OPS, 10 homers and 14 RBI.
Arozarena did not have the same postseason success with the Mariners last year, hitting just .188 with a .575 OPS and one homer in 12 games. Still, the outfielder has proven to be a valuable player for Seattle. He currently leads the team with a 2.5 bWAR and should make the All-Star team for the second straight season.
Seattle enters play on Tuesday with a 40-39 record and 1.5 game lead in the American League West division. They will begin a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight.
