Mariners Make Roster Move After Loss to Rangers

The Seattle Mariners reshuffled their bullpen Sunday after Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Texas Rangers , recalling right-hander Alex Hoppe from Triple-A Tacoma and optioning Nick Davila to the Tacoma Rainiers.

Seattle made the move after Davila threw 22 pitches over 1 1/3 innings in Saturday's defeat, leaving him unavailable for the series finale.

The Mariners entered Sunday at 51-54, third in the American League West, 2.5 games behind the first-place Texas Rangers after dropping the first two games of the series.

Nick Davila, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Hoppe returns after making 21 relief appearances for Seattle this season, posting a 6.38 ERA with 26 strikeouts across 24 innings. The right-hander gives manager Dan Wilson another bullpen option as the Mariners continue their push in the division race.

Davila heads back to Tacoma after compiling a 3.57 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 22 2/3 innings in 20 appearances. He allowed one run while finishing Saturday's game against Texas.

Seattle has frequently rotated optionable relievers between Tacoma and the majors this season to keep its bullpen fresh during a demanding stretch of games. Sunday's move follows that pattern with the trade deadline approaching.

Despite the demotion, Davila has provided reliable middle relief and remains a likely candidate to return later this season if the Mariners need additional bullpen depth.

Hoppe will now look to capitalize on another opportunity as Seattle tries to avoid a sweep and regain ground in the AL West before August.
