The Seattle Mariners acquired Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade this past offseason. There was excitement around the deal and it seemed as if Donovan was a perfect fit for the team. After swinging the bat well to begin the new campaign, Donovan landed on the injured list with a groin injury. Mariners manager Dan Wilson shared an update on Donovan’s injury status ahead of the team’s game on Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins, via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.
“Per Dan Wilson, third baseman Brendan Donovan (groin) is on track to be reinstated from the IL on the upcoming homestand. Donovan has been working out, including baseball activity, in Seattle,” Divish reported.
The Mariners are currently in Minnesota. Their final game on the road is on Wednesday. The Mariners will then return home to play the Kansas City Royals for three games and Atlanta Braves for three games. According to the report, Donovan could be activated at some point during the six-game homestand.
Donovan, 29, hit .304/.437/.518 across 71 plate appearances before landing on the injured list. In addition to his offensive impact, Donovan is also a versatile defender. He can handle duties at second base, third base and in the outfield. He is a valuable player to have on the roster.
The Mariners are certainly excited for Donovan to return from injury. Seattle is currently 14-16 overall and in third place in the American League West standings. Donovan should be able to help the Mariners play better overall baseball.
