Despite an ongoing federal investigation and the sale of numerous holdings as he continues to liquidate his assets, Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter remains intent on keeping the prestigious baseball club.
Walter made his first public comments regarding a potential sale of the Dodgers to Jack Harris of the California Post, saying it is not on the table and that will not be changing:
“We’re going to keep the team no matter what,” he said. “We’re going to be winning for 10 years or more. I think our commitment to do so will be just like it has been in the past. And, you know, we don’t win every year, but we’re going to try to.”
Walter’s financial empire is being probed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in a parallel investigation for alleged tax fraud involving insurance companies tied to his TWG Global.
The investigation began with loans by two Delaware life insurers owned by Walter to companies connected to him or TWG Global, which were not disclosed as the required “related party” transactions. Related party transactions made by insurers must be reported to limit conflicts of interest and protect policyholders.
Walter reportedly has to repay roughly $20 billion by the end of the year, prompting a rapid liquidation of assets. The most prominent of which was selling the Los Angeles Lakers to Josh Kusher and former Disney CEO Bob Iger just one year after purchasing a controlling stake from Jeanie Buss.
In addition, Walter sold his stakes in Chelsea Football Club and started exploring a sale of the Los Angeles Sparks.
Walter also reportedly approached Charter Communications with a proposal to end Spectrum SportsNet and SportsNet LA regional TV contracts early in exchange for a lump-sum payment.
Walter selling off his assets amid the investigation has continued to fuel speculation of a potential sale, despite the Dodgers doing their best to shut down that talk.
Dodgers president Stan Kasten was the first to deny any potential sale of the team and did so twice during the season. “The Dodgers are not being sold, they’re not going to be sold, they’re not for sale. There is no process that has been started to sell, period,” he said.
TWG Global also released statements defending Walter and denied any claims the Dodgers have been improperly funded.
“Regarding the Los Angeles Dodgers, to be clear, the team is not being sold and no sale process has been initiated,” the company said.
According to various reports by financial journalists, the Dodgers are not under investigation, and no links have been found between the club’s finances and improper funding by Walter’s other businesses.
TWG also ruled out the possibility of Walter selling his shares in the Cadillac Formula 1 team or “any other part of TWG Motorsports,” but did not rule out the sale of any other assets.
The Dodgers have continued to assure fans it’s “business as usual” within the organization.
After being eliminated in the National League Championship Series, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman shared that Walter was already looking ahead to the 2027 season.
“We talked to Mark after we lost, and he was obviously really disappointed,” Friedman relayed. “But so much of his focus was on ‘OK, what can we do? What are our plans? What are our thoughts for the offseason?’
“And our brains weren’t quite there yet, but so much of his focus was on, ‘ How do we put ourselves in the best position to win in ’27?”
