Marlins Announce Xavier Edwards Injury Update

With an outside chance of making the MLB Playoffs this year, the Miami Marlins will need to do so without their ironman second baseman Xavier Edwards.

On Monday, the Marlins placed Edwards on the 10-day IL with what the team is describing as a left thumb sprain. Edwards, 27, left Sunday’s game immediately after his hand was jammed by Jorbit Vivas, who was sliding into second base. Following the game, Edwards described the injury as a “jammed thumb”, and after some testing, the Marlins decided that an IL stint was necessary.

The injury looked much worse in the moment as Edwards ran off the field even while the play was still going. The throw, which missed Edwards, went into the outfield, allowing Vivas to advance to third base. Miami went on to win the game by a score of 6-2, which moved them back above .500 for the season and just 3.5 games back of the final NL wild-card berth.

Edwards’ absence will be his first of the season for the Marlins, as he has suited up in all 137 games this year. In 2026, Edwards has a slash line of .282/.361/.376, with a career-high six home runs, 51 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. Edwards is a patient hitter who does not strike out much and has an above-average walk rate.

The Marlins did not disclose the severity of the injury, which likely means Edwards avoided a major sprain. If it is mild, Edwards would likely only need a minimum stint on the IL, and it is encouraging that he already felt better after Sunday’s game.

In a corresponding move, the Marlins recalled infielder Jared Serna from Triple-A Jacksonville. Serna can play second base, third base, and shortstop, and when he suits up, it will be his MLB debut.
