The pitching injuries continued for the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, when starter Eury Perez left his start early due to a spasm in his right hamstring.
Perez was dealing against the Toronto Blue Jays , racking up nine strikeouts in four innings while allowing just three hits. As soon as Perez was lifted from the game, the Marlins' bullpen proceeded to give up the tying run on a Nathan Lukes double to center field.
The injury itself seemed to happen under peculiar circumstances. Perez was seen stretching between innings in the Miami dugout and then pulled up gingerly, favoring his hamstring. He immediately sat down on the bench and was tended to by the team's trainer, who deemed that Perez would not be able to take the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning. Perez needed assistance making his way down the stairs and back into the Marlins' clubhouse.

The severity of Perez's injury is not yet known, although hamstring injuries tend to lead to stints on the IL. Perez is in the midst of a solid start to the MLB season, posting a 4.60 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 72 strikeouts in 62.2 innings of work. The 23-year-old was considered an untouchable piece by the Marlins in the offseason and is under team control through 2029.
Perez's injury comes on the heels of the news that top prospect Robby Snelling would miss the next year of action after undergoing Tommy John surgery last week. Top prospect Thomas White, who was believed to be a contender to take Snelling's place on the roster, was also placed on the injured list last week with a shoulder ailment. Needless to say, the Marlins' pitching depth is going to be further tested if Perez requires an extended absence for his injury.

The injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Perez, who was finding his game over the past two starts. Wednesday's game was his second consecutive start with no walks, something Perez has struggled with at times. The nine strikeouts in four innings were a season-high, and made it eight consecutive starts this year where Perez has recorded at least five punchouts.
