Marlins fire entire pro scouting department

The Miami Marlins have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons, and the team is currently not set to make the playoffs in 2026. The Marlins also sold off at the MLB Trade Deadline, which further hampers their playoff chances.

While the team attempts to make a run in the National League, they have made some major changes to the front office, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

“The Miami Marlins make wholesale firings in their pro scouting department,” Nightengale posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The entirety of the pro scouting department was let go today. According to Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, this was not an uncommon move.

“Those familiar with the Marlins’ decision did not specify exactly how many scouts were being let go but said the move reflected the front office’s desire to use more video during the scouting process. Many clubs have cut from their various scouting departments in recent years because more video and information is available on players. For clubs like the Marlins, the scouting job has evolved, changing what they value,” Rosenthal and Sammon wrote.

There could be a logical explanation, as the team is preparing for a potential lockout in 2027 as the collective bargaining agreement is set to expire. It could also be another cost-cutting measure.

The Marlins are currently 67-64 on the year, which places them in third in the NL East, and nine games back of the Atlanta Braves in the division. They are also four games behind the San Diego Padres for the final wild card spot in the National League. The Marlins begin a series with the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.
